Ultimate Last Post

After Polonnurawa we were definitely in going home mode. We forsook  public transportation and took a 40 can taxi ride back to Siguriya. Unfortunately we checked into a rather grotty tree house close to Lion Rock. It had no ac and the power was out so we had no fan and we sweltered in this rather unappetizing hut with a great view.
Next day we climbed   Pidrangula Rock which was close by and we got great views of the surrounding countryside. 




Elephant Pooh. In this country it is a sign of good luck to step in a fresh elephant turd.There are approximately 17000  elephants in this country. Just a couple of days ago seven elephants were  killed and a train derailed.

After our two days here we took a four hour taxi ride to Negombo which is on the coast very close to the airport. We have a very nice room overlooking the pool and ocean and have been doing absolutely nothing. I can barely find the energy to pick up my binoculars and identify the local common birds. 




Tomorrow we will board our flight at 2330 hours and start the 32 hour trip home. So good bye Sri Lanka, bring on the cool and snow and clear skies of the Yukon.

We spent a lot of time worrying about whether the authorities would let us in the country with out an onward or return ticket. We went to the trouble of buying a bogus return ticket online. Of course when we went through immigration, they barely looked at us much less asked to see some plane ticket.  Having only carry on luggage we were through pretty quickly. Having changed some money got new sim cards for our phones we embarked on the long taxi ride to our hotel near downtown Colombo. Yammy said she wanted a room with an ocean view so I splurged on this 36 canadian room. Colombo of course is a hot polluted noisey city. Crossing a street unprepared could be your last act on this planet. Every vehicle could spell your doom but tuktuks are your worst threat.Do as the locals do and bunch up . Delft island

Delft Island is only about 35 miles from.India. if you are a birder you come here to see the Indian Courser, a plover type bird which is not seen elsewhere in Sri Lanka.    Lots of people come here on a day trip. We opted to spend two nights at the Salmudra Resort. We checked into the honeymoon suite with a ten thousand flies. Hotel wasn't bad except for the dam flies. Our first day we did a self guided trek across half the island we saw the Growing Stone, The Banyan Tree and The Baobob Tree.  This Baobob Tree is not native to Sri Lanka. This tree was brought here by Arab traders in the 16th century  We were continually on the look out for the Courser but no luck. And I was getting a little discouraged. Day 2 we took a tuk tuk tour to the other sights  and I showed a picture of the courser  to the driver . He took us to the area of wild horses where we finally managed to see the bird.

Suriya and Elephants

Suriya is a big chunk of rock sticking out of the jungle. Some king a few zillion years ago, fearing retribution from his brother whom he had dethroned, built his palace on top of the rock. It is one of the most popular tourist sites in Sri Lanka and rightly so.  In the afternoon we went looking for Elephants.
